Celebrating Chinese New Year & Burns Night

Three female residents and two male residents celebrating chinese new year.

January is often a quiet month following the busy Christmas period, however, we made sure to have plenty for residents to look forward to at Valerian Court Care Home.

On Sunday 22nd January we welcomed the year of the Rabbit for Chinese New Year with a delicious takeaway meal and decorations made by some of our residents. It was so nice to have a special occasion to celebrate and residents were keen to learn about the Chinese culture in the days leading up to it.

After the meal we watched some of the traditional celebrations from China, the residents were amused by the dozens of children dressed as white rabbits hopping around a huge stage and after this, there were lots of “ooooohs” and “aaaahs” as we watched the spectacular fireworks.

As Valerian Court is currently building resident numbers since its recent opening, we were delighted to extend our invites to our first Burns Night to family and friends. We had a great turnout with all residents welcoming their loved ones to the event.

Local musician and storyteller Clare joined us for the evening playing an array of instruments, reciting Burns poetry, encouraging audience participation, and doing a traditional welcoming and cutting of the haggis.

Traditional haggis, neeps and tatties were on the menu alongside a minced beef and onion pie and cheese and onion pasties. Many of us enjoyed Cranachan for the first time and the food element of the evening was finished with a great selection of cheeses and oat cakes.

Clare, our special guest ended the night with a few riddles and everyone was impressed with how the occasion turned out.

It is important to us that we can enable our residents to enjoy celebrations with their nearest and dearest. Our door is always open for loved ones to spend quality time with residents in a safe and welcoming environment where wonderful memories can be made.

We look forward to celebrating more national and international holidays in the upcoming months. We will be sure to have themed activities and crafts at the ready for residents to help decorate the home.
